Update on Life and Fandom

Okay. Here's what you missed about Meowbooks...

She was in her school musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, set in the 1920s. As... --a Random Conservative New Yorker: Felt as though she should have a ruler and was an 1800s school teacher. -was allowed to be disapproving of all "moderns." --an Office worker: -learned a bit of tap and was spun around on stage in a chair with wheels -was outraged/still in love with Vito Carbone in the song "Forget about the Boy" --a Priscilla Hotel extra: Lots of dresses. One of which made me think of Sailor Moon. Lots of oohing, ahhing, and running away from creepy Mrs.Meers. --Cafe Society Dancer: had an enormous feathery, fluttering, fan and a white, sparkly dress She's watched Glee and Accidentally in Love. I like watching things that twist around the conventional and make it new. There are far too many sitcoms that seem to follow the same formula. :D Oh and IDINA "Ms.AMAZING" MENZEL is coming to Glee !

She needs to post Torchwood/Doctor Who silly fic and catch up on raise_the_dead character challenges. Perferably before the End of Time comes around. :D

She read Twilight and New Moon. I was curious and I didn't think it was terribly unfair of me to judge Twilight despite not having read it. The verdict? It's incredibly addictive, hard to put down, has the supernatural, romantic, and a bit of action. I enjoy seeing Meyer's twist on the well-trod myths, but I am distracted. I am distracted from enjoying it fully because I don't like Romeo and Juliet. Bella has wrapped too much of her happiness in loving, no, worshiping Edward. She'd rather drown-- die-- than be without him. There is a distinction between dying for the one you love and trying to kill yourself to see a phantom of him. Juliet, at the very least, had the excuse of being born in a time where there were very few options to be strong. Bella has taken care of both her parents and was willing to die to save one of them. She's smart, cares deeply about those she loves, and has an open-mind--all of those are traits she should be proud of having, but she doesn't see it. I want her to acknowledge she is worth something, but until she does...I am distracted and a bit disturbed.

Meme

Snagged from flyingpigs_live
1. Reply to this post, and I will pick six of your icons. 2. Make a post (including the meme info) and write a drabble about (each of) the icons I chose. 3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts. 4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon squeeage. (I'll probably post the icon pictures later-I have to track them down in my now dusty photobucket. Time hath not allow'th much fandom art of late. That's just a bit of Shakespeariana for ya. :D At least that's what the professional actors came to my school for Shakespeare workshops on Fool Characters and understanding some of the literary devices called made up Shakespear-y language :D. )

1. we -Elizabeth and Will onscreen don't have as many happy moments, but it's lovely to see the actors that played them enjoyed filming. :D 2. hermioneron -While I'm still not sold on this pairing, I do agree that this 2/3 of the trio is fantastic. What would Harry do without them? Plus, this picture was just adorable. 3. james- I consider it a shame that some people saw him as merely a stuffy, white-wigged, officer. He is/was much, much more. And if Davenport ever gets another shot at PotC I hope he's allowed to exercise his lovely comedic skills (if you haven't seen him in Coupling, please do). 4. len cariou sweeney -Len Cariou was the original musical stage Sweeney. I've only seen fuzzy video of his stint on the stage, but the audio I've heard won me over. I prefer his mix of sadness and madness over George Hearn's loud and booming Sweeney. Patti LuPone is lovely in her own right, but Lansbury's Lovett is my favorite stage Lovett. Her crazy Lovett was a wonderful example of embracing a character. If there was a way I could see a mix of Cariou/Lansbury's comedy with the darkness of Depp/Carter's Sweeney that would be the perfect Sweeney Todd production in my eyes. 5. mm-A few years ago before AWE, I had written a fanfiction with Murtogg and Mullroy. In it, they had been shipwrecked on a tiny spit of land and were rescued by Jack. They felt indebted to him and decided to turn pirate until they could repay him. I never thought I'd ever see the duo as pirates on screen. I wish they had remained Navy to maintain balance, but I did thoroughly enjoy seeing them again. :D 6. potterpuffs -Let's face it, Mrs. Weasley's triumph over Bellatrix was AWEsome. 'Nuff said.
And now for Jack Davenport screencaps I took of him looking Norrington-ish in The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant.

Five Question Meme

Snagged from melroseee

Leave me a comment saying "You're so beautiful, you could be a waitress" and I will respond by asking you five questions that satisfy my curiosity. Update your journal with the answers to the questions, including this in the post.

1. Favorite potc character?

Drat. You're making me choose...

I PLEAD THE FIFTH,but as a consolation prize...

Villian: Barbossa (CotBP is still my favorite.)
Minor Character Duo: Murtogg and Mullroy (They had their own character arch! Fear pirates, fight pirates, lose confidence in what they were doing, turn pirate!)
Minor Naval Officer: Groves

2. What's your favorite color?
Greeeeeen! :D

3. Best new show this season?
I think it's a tie between Glee and White Collar. Glee amazes me with it's ability to make life a musical and acid-tongued Sue's awesomeness. White Collar is simply making me enjoy USA even more with the perfectly played Detective and <strike>Bryce Larkin...erm..</strike>charming art thief.

4. What makes you happy?

My family and friends, writing, acting, singing, learning, drawing, roller coasters, silliness, pirate hats, and history.

5. What's first on your christmas list?!

The Tenth Doctor's farewell in "The Ends of Time" Two-parter

If I have to choose an actual object...I'd love a fob watch.

PotC Fanfic Raise the Dead Challenge March 2009: Gibbs Part 2

Title: A Change in the Wind-Part 2/2
Author: meowbooks
Rating: PG
Characters: Gibbs, Jack (in part 2)
Words: 683
Disclaimer: The Mouse owns Pirates. :D
Summary: This was made in response to raise_the_dead 's character challenge. My take on Gibbs' turn to pirate involving lost love and a touch of the supernatural...

Part 1

A Change in the Wind-Part 2

Joshamee stared into the murky bottom of his drink fascinated by how similar it was to the countless others he had consumed. A voice nearby caught his ear, the voice itself was unfamiliar, but the unmistakable tone of a storyteller enjoying the effect his words caused was not. Joshamee turned around. He couldn’t tell if it was the drink or the strange spell words could cast when used by a practiced voice, but the storyteller’s oddly dreadlocked and trinket ornamented hair seemed inconsequential and unimportant.

“…and it is said if one were to brave such waters and reach that certain splash of foam, salt, and liquid they shall learn the most favorable course to pursue on their jour--”

“Alright, what you’ll have, love?”

The storyteller looked up at the young woman and frowned. “I don’t believe I--”

“I don’t care wot you believe. Ye’ve been squawking for hours and haven’t ordered anything since the first one.”

“I’m fine.”

The woman smiled. “Yes you are, dear, but looks ain’t no excuse fer not buying anything.” She called over her shoulder, “Red!”

An oafish, large, red-headed man appeared, grabbed the storyteller, swung him over his shoulder and headed towards the door. Gibbs shouted from the counter over the protests of the listeners and the storyteller’s struggle. “I’ll pay for his next one!”

Red looked to the woman. She shrugged, “I don’t care who’s doing the paying.”

The woman collected her coins and the large man dropped the storyteller. The storyteller picked himself up, plopped his leather tri-corned hat on, slipped into a seat next to Gibbs and extended a hand.

“Captain Jack Sparrow.” Sparrow grinned recognizing a flicker of recognition in Gibbs’ widening eyes.

“Joshamee Gibbs.”

“Mr. Gibbs,” Sparrow hoisted his new drink, nodded, and took a sip. “How may I repay my rescuer?”

“I wanted to hear the end.”

Sparrow leaned in closer, candlelight glinting off a coin in his hair, “How would you like to be a part of it?”

“You’re certain it’s true?”

“That’s the trick, isn’t it? Discovering what will give you the run around and what you should run after. I am.”

***

The sky was blank, moonless, and eerily starless. Gibbs could hear the water slapping the hull below them, but the feeble light of the lantern he held only illuminated inches of air and space. The crew was huddled close together on deck trying to pool their sources of light together.

“ ‘Most favorable course’! All I see is us lost.” growled a lanky, brown-haired crewman. Sparrow shushed him and held up a hand. “It’s not time yet.”

“When will it be—” A shrill hiss strained the air, the lanterns trembled in their hands, the feeble light formed into harsh streaks radiating further and further out until every eye was blinded by white. Gibbs raised a hand to shield his eyes, but a soft touch stopped him. He raised his head.

“Joshamee?” It was Anne.

“Yes?” She reached her hand towards his face and—

“You slapped me…”said Gibbs stunned, rubbing his cheek. Anne folded her arms and glowered.

“You used to listen to me. Why’d you stop listening to me?”

“B-but- you’re dead.”

“ All the more reason to listen. I’ve been trying to tell you for years—”

“Tell me what?”

Anne sighed, “Don’t interrupt, love. Stop staring into your cups. Stop moping about. Talk to people. And why’d you stop telling stories?”

“ I couldn’t.”

Anne smiled, “You’d think about me, wouldn’t you? Next time, think of the good things.” Anne paused, “I think you should stick with Jack-even if it’s just for a while.”

“Jack Sparrow?”

“Yes. Watch him. He doesn’t have anyone. Not really, all those smiles…they’re hiding sadness, but he does love this life. You need to remember how. He’ll give you stories to tell. And I’ll want to hear them when we see each other next...You won’t forget?”

Gibbs shook his head, “Never.”

Anne kissed his cheek. He blinked and she was gone and the moon, stars and light were returned to their proper place in the air and sky.

Up Next: Norrington (After Norrington’s the rest will probably be drabbles otherwise I’ll never catch up. ;D)

He’d taken to the sea the same as his father, his grandfather, and if the family’s version of history was true, his great-grandmother, Mary. He swabbed, knotted, hauled and spied St. Elmo’s blue fire atop the masts aboard many ships, and when he found himself unexpectedly a navy man he decided to stay and see if he might gain some glory.

He married Anne who enjoyed the tales he spun. She was capable of terrifying straying thoughts out of his head no matter the number of miles between them and could hold her own during the months he was away. He worked harder when he learned she was with child.

And drank harder when he learned of their death— three months too late.

The years passed, the ships changed, the captains changed, but he didn’t take notice until one despicable enough to loathe was questioned at the end of a pirate’s sword.

“How do you treat your men?”

“Well enough, they fought for me,” growled the captain. The defeated Navy crew raised their heads and stiffened stances, their silent, affronted, stares seeping with repulsion. Joshamee spoke, “We never fought for you.”

They locked the offending former captain up in darkness. He could not distinguish day from night with his eyes, but with his ears. At night, his former crew surrounded his cell hissing, whispering, retelling, every cruelty he had caused and so he grew to dread the sunsets he could not see. The nightly whispers ceased only when they reached a pirate port called Tortuga and allowed him to stumble down the gangplank into the more merciful noises of the crowd.

It was there the crew divided up their loot and said adieu. Some swore an oath to the Pirate Code and the pirate captain, others searched for ships bound home, and some headed towards the taverns unsure as to where else they could turn.

Joshamee Gibbs was among the latter. He chose a tavern with a sign of a woman smiling and happy holding a bouquet of flowers on her wedding day--The Faithful Bride.

Next up, Part 2 and then Norrington's turn! (I apologize to the other characters for skipping them, but I shall write for them in due course.)

Elizabeth admires Jamaica's defiant ways.
February 2009: Elizabeth

Young Miss Elizabeth Swann admired Jamaica’s defiance. The island simply refused to change seasons. Since she had made the passage from England two years ago, summer’s sun, rain, and wind had flashed their various moods from playful to wrathful, but autumn’s changing leaves, winter’s chill and spring’s mild nature had never materialized.

Elizabeth would’ve believed Jamaica was enchanted, mired in an endless summer, and time was still, preventing the seasons from their usual dance for dominance if it weren’t for the frustrating, quite perceptible fact Will had grown taller than her.

A week ago, Elizabeth had stepped out of her carriage when suddenly a mud monster had crept out from behind the wheels and knocked her face first into the mud. She lifted her head, spat out the mud, and found a helping hand being offered. She grasped it and was pulled to her feet. All thoughts about the mud on her face vanished—it was Will.

“It’s lovely to see you, Will, but…” Elizabeth tilted her head up slightly to look into his eyes, “it’s quite rude of you to have grown taller in my absence.”

Will smiled, but the moment was brief. Governor Swann coughed and Will realized he was still holding her hand. He let go and averted his eyes, “My apologies, Miss Swann.”

Miss Swann frowned, “Elizabeth.”

Will hesitated, “Good day, Miss Swann.” He walked away.

Now, as she remembered her father’s approving smile, Elizabeth wished Jamaica had lent its defiance to Will.

Next Up... Gibbs

Captain Jacks!

On Deviantart today I found an impressive painting of --count 'em--THREE famous, fictional, Captain Jacks. It's unlikely we'll ever see these three together in an actual movie/TV crossover so this just might be the next best thing. :D

PotC Fanfic: In the Dead of the Night

Title: In the Dead of the Night
Author: meowbooks
Word Count: 284
Rating: PG
Characters: Elizabeth, William James Turner III
Summary: A fic concerning what to call a young Turner.
---

"No, don't leave me! No!" A blade, grey, offensive and cold, was sunk into Will’s chest. The world was blurring, Elizabeth heard her own sobs, smelled the reek of salt, of decay and blood at her feet, and sensed unwanted hands tearing her away from her beloved. Her Will. She broke free, stumbling her way back to him, but the ship tilted, steepening the climb. She slid backward with every move, her fingers scratched at the near vertical blood-soaked deck, she screamed--

Elizabeth woke still screaming. She opened her eyes and found her hands tangled in her sheets and a cradle near her bed. It’s tiny occupant stirred and cried out in a half-woken, unsure way. She scooped the baby into her arms.

“Sssh, sssh," Elizabeth bit her lip trying to think her way out of hearing his vocal complaints. An idea came to her and she smiled. "William James Turner, I order you to stop crying. No?" The small one paused, but scrunched up his face again to start another cannonade of tears. Elizabeth sighed,"No.."

The young mother adjusted her hold of the brawling baby, patted him on the back, and paced near the foot of her bed. "He's safe. We're safe. No, no, no,we're alright, Jaime…”

The baby hiccuped, and quieted. Elizabeth sat him on her lap. Two pairs of brown eyes met. “Did you like that name?" Jaime blinked. "You're such a little thing. 'William' is too long, 'Bill' and 'Will' are taken--you can blame your paternal grandfather for naming his son after himself." The little person tilted his head to one side almost as if he were considering her words.

"Is that an 'Aye'?Well," said Elizabeth smiling,"I like it."
Doctor Who Spoilers!

SPOILERS FOR DOCTOR WHO SPECIALS/SERIES 5

Specials
Timothy Dalton aka James Bond is in one of them! Yay!

Eleventh Doctor's Outfit

I'm not fond of the tweed, but I do like the bowtie. The coat and tie- I hope that means he'll be slightly academic and this isn't a goodbye to the brainy specs. It wasn't until my second viewing of his new attire that I realized he reminded me of another Doctor, namely Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard of NCIS. That cheered me slightly, perhaps the 11th Doctor humorously rambles on with interesting facts about history while he’s suppose to fighting paradoxes and hostile aliens?

The hair, ah, it’s still early. We’ll see if you’ll ever have any hair do that will rival or echo Ten’s dynamic, mood affected, and gosh darn amazing hair.

The Doctor's Companion
My first impression of Amy Pond is she's gorgeous, and might be an artist-with her brightly colored sweatshirts, leggings, comfortable shoes. I'm hoping we'll have more than one companion eventually. I watched some Classic Who and it adds another dynamic to the TARDIS. I also hope we get to see more of the rooms in the ol' blue box.

SPOILERS FOR TORCHWOOD SERIES

Seriously. Spoilers. I'm not kidding.Walk away.I'm having too much fun with colors...Ready?HERE THEY COME!

It was chilling,<strike> filled with plot holes</strike>, chock full of Russel T. Davies angst-ridden drama and action, and was the best series of Torchwood yet.
The Good/Funny
-Gwen greeting Tosh and Owen's photograph.
-"Are you two having shenanigans in the dark?"
-Hah! That's right double agent, you can't dance on in and replace Owen.
-The government officials need to go to Computer Safety 101. Never, ever, share your user names and passwords children! Or write them on a sheet of paper and conveniently stick them onto a computer monitor in a very public place...
-Rule #346 baddies must be horrible shots.
-Whoa, wait. All their software is stored away on servers-what?
-Rhys is always the last to know...Sorry, mate.
-I like potatoes even more now.
-Ianto's brother-in-law and his day care scheme.
-They mentioned the Doctor!
-Aw, good ol' PC Andy. He was adorable and cared about Gwen and the children more than his job.

The Sad/Bad
-JackHarkness skinless and writhing in agony was disgusting.
-"They feel good." That part was horrifying--children used as drugs is twisted. The realization that the politicians were negotiating which children would be chosen was even more twisted.
-Peter Capaldi played Frobisher perfectly from civil servant, to unwilling pawn, to desperation--the moment behind the closed door was heartbreaking.
-Ianto...We learned about Owen and Toshiko's pasts and family, too and THEY died. They can't keep killing characters we grow fond of, they just can't. I was holding onto to hope that Jack would stop it before his grandson died. It's like they decided, "Since we can't kill Jack let's make him suffer more! Yeah! We need him to be angsty and alone. Wait, that sounds...we're not drawing parallels between him and the Doctor, right? Just checking."

A Rare Rant on Post Lengths

On my treks through internet commenting pages (blogs, forums,"comment on this video" et cetera) I've noticed often when someone writes a well thought out, grammatically correct, full sentenced structured post leaning towards a lengthier side he or she feels the need to apologize at the end.

Most people comment with one or two sentences about something out of a combination of laziness, a struggle to find the right words to say what we mean, or lack of patience. I'd be delighted if I could write interesting, coherent responses consistently and I admire those who can.

They shouldn't be apologizing for having a brain or think that their opinion isn't worth our time. We can choose what to read and what to skip. Well thought out opinions are a pleasure to read and a relief from negative, one or two word comments of rude people that snare most people's attention simply because they were made to provoke. They do nothing more than make themselves look bad.

Thank you to everyone who tries to be reasonable when they respond to things and well done to those who can make their thoughts sing--no matter what the length of the post is. All of you have brains.

Fanfic: Before the Shipwreck-5/5

Title: Before the Shipwreck-Part 5/5
Author:meowbooks
Rating: PG
Characters: Pintel, Ragetti, Barbossa, Three Original Ones
Pairings: None
Summary: An account in their own words of how Charlie Mercer, Oliver Wainwright and Jonathan Green met the notorious and most evil Captain Barbossa of the Black Pearl. Part 5: A brand new chapter! I felt the original was a bit unfinished.

Epilogue: Jack Finishes the Tale

What’s all this? Mister Charles Mercer! Yes, you, the one with a raised fist and one shoe, leave Jon’s face alone. I won’t have you bloodying the cobblestones with undue, undeserved, and—that’s nonsense, everyone’s afraid of their mothers, that’s what they’re there for, frightening little snips of things such as yourselves into respectable young men. Not that it always works…

Sssh! Sssh! Sssh! SHUT IT! It’s bad enough when you caused havoc on my Pearl. Now, you’re sullying what was a perfectly disrespectable visit to Port Madison. I ruined your story? Hah! Calumnious lies!

What was the subject of said tale? Barbossa’s attack on Port Madison. Hm.I supposes you’ll want me to include your parts in it seeing as how these listeners have heard it from you lot first. How far along?

All right, well, unlike these three I was not present at the aforementioned proceedings. I was after that traitorous, bony, codfish, Barbossa’s blood at the time, not knowing he was already paying for the sin of avarice courtesy of cursed Aztec gold. He and his crew had marooned me on a God forsaken, sun-burnt, isle, tearing the Pearl from my hands after obtaining the gold’s location.

I suppose now, I should be thanking them. A life without pleasure, not knowing the sweet satisfaction of an apple’s crunch or the salty kiss of a mermaid—that’s another tale I should get to telling you—or a soft as angel breath breeze on the face, is no life at all. And truth be told, even I wouldn’t have wished it on them.

Where were we, oh yes…After setting Barbossa aflame, a sight I would have relished at the time, Oliver, Charlie, and Jon fled the Pearl quick as a pursued cat, beloved apples in arms. Barbossa’s skeletal form spat out a command, cursing their names and his men for letting three boys humiliate the crew of the feared Black Pearl.

“Masters Pintel and Ragetti! From now on, we’re not having childish dinner guests; we’re not having any dinner guests until we find Bootstraps’ spawn and give him his final meal! Now, get off my deck and join your pathetic excuses of crewmates!”

Meanwhile, Charlie and Jon were being dragged back home by their mothers unaware a crew of undead pirates were in pursuit.

“Sneakin’ off in the middle of the night!” scolded Mrs. Mercer a grip strong as any iron shackle on her boy’s arm.

“Nearly killin’ me with worry, you ungrateful thing,” sighed Mrs. Green pulling on Jon’s collar, “how many times have I told you them pirates will give you vegetables? How many times?”

“I’m sorry, mum…”

“Really, Jon? Crying to yer—”

“You be quiet, Charles!” snarled Mrs. Mercer. “You’re probably the reason he has to go apologizing to his mother! Why don’t you ever apologize to me?”

“’Cause you wouldn’t believe me any—OWWW! Okay, okay, I’m sorry, I’m sorry!”

“But, mum, we were taken by pirates,” began Jon. Mrs. Green put a hand over heart and kneeled down to look into her boy’s eyes. “Oh, oh, Jonathan! Charles and Oliver have finally done it! They’ve addled your brains!” She pulled Jon close to her bosom, kissing him fretfully on the head.

What? That’s what you told me she did. No questioning your former Captain, Jon! Sssh.

“What d’ya mean, my Charles addled his brains?” said Mrs. Mercer sharply relinquishing her grip on Charlie’s shoulder. “What, just ‘cause you serve some fancy lady, your boy is better than mine?”

Mrs. Green pushed Jon away, rising to her full height, hands on hips, chin tilted up. “Your boy?Your little crim-in-al,”—she dragged each syllable out—, “and his ratty little red-headed friend have been corrupting my boy ever since you and your drunken sailor of a husband came here!”

“Always trying to be clean, as if a little speck of dirt was going to spoil your child, at least my boy can defend himself,” said Mrs. Mercer patting Charles on the head. “What can your’s do? Write an angry letter?”

“What’s fighting going to do for him?”said Mrs. Green circling Mrs. Mercer like a dog. “Get him killed, that’s what!”

Charlie and Jon backed away—right into skeletal hands. They looked up to see ol’ wooden eyed, skinny, ol’ what’s his face, and stout, balding even in skeletal form, Pintel, swords in hand.

The two boys looked at each other, gulped and screamed, “MUM!”

The two ladies turned, their fiery energy turning with them, they stared at the skeletal pirates as if they were as threatening as a dead fish they were ready to gut and serve for supper. The two skeletal pirates glanced at each other, tightening their grip on their swords.

“I’m sorry, dearie, for accusing you.” said Mrs. Green. The two women strode forward.

“Bless his heart!” smiled Mrs. Mercer, “Jon was only trying to warn us…If only Charles was as considerate…”

“No, no, Charles probably defended, my Jon.”

The two pirates grabbed the two boys and lowered their swords near their throats as they began walking backwards. Pintel smiled, “Now, now, ladies, you wouldn’t want anything to happen to these two, would you?”

Mrs. Mercer elbowed a running skeletal pirate holding an armful of swag in the head and ripped the skeletal arm still holding a sword from him. Mrs. Green tripped another unfortunate skeletal looter and took his boarding axe.

“Parley?” grinned Ragetti backing into a wall. Mrs. Mercer growled and Mrs. Green said, “We don’t speak, French, dear.”

“Did you hear that, Ragetti?” said Pintel. “They don’t speak French. Sorry for the inconvenience.” The two pirates shoved the boys back towards their mothers. “We was after two little French speaking boys.”

The two women walked around their sons. Mrs. Mercer freed the sword from the detached skeletal arm, threw the arm aside, and pointed the sword at the two pirates. She didn’t look back as she said, “Boys, go home.”

Charlie and Jon acquiesced, running all the way, only stopping to let Oliver join them and wave at his parents who were shoving a skeletal capuchin monkey into a barrel and tossing a skeletal dreadlocked pirate into the path of an empty flaming carriage pulled by a team of horses.

While chaos prevailed that night in Port Madison, three boys were able to scrape by unscathed. Unfortunately, their appetite for adventure had not been sated and they stowed away onto a merchant ship. A series of events occurred that later found them aboard the Pearl under my captaincy, but that is a rather more complicated tale to tell.

Try looking up one Joshamee Gibbs if you should ever find yourself on Tortuga. He would take far more pleasure in telling that one than—

Ah, I recognize the sound of black boots and barked orders. Farewell, and remember this as the day you were told a tale by Captain Jack Sparrow!

Part 4
Table of Contents

More Fandom Connections: The Doctor and Captain Jack Sparrow

L.A. Without A Map,a 1998 film, starred Captain Jack Sparrow and The Tenth Doctor! David Tennant was Richard and Johnny Depp cameoed (is that a word?) as his Dead Man character, William Blake and as himself. :D

Whoooo! I've been entertaining the idea of a Pirates/Doctor Who crossover fic (my ideas keep building up, but I haven't had the time to write them out...) , but apparently these two universes have already crossed once before. :D

I'm quite pleased about this...

Thoughts on Wicked: The book and the musical
I see the two as parallel universes. Both of them are amazing and complex, but in different ways.
Musical
Timing, choreography, acting, singing, it being live on stage means you can experience it with sound and sight with many people and their energy. The story of the musical is more optimistic and different in tone. It's intention is to bring the story to everyone.
The Book
The book is darker, a bit more twisted, we get whispered stories, murder, discrimination, propaganda, the seedier side of Oz, we see a girl and her frustrations and the few lights in her life. We get magical words to peruse at our own pace. It's definitely geared towards an older audience, but the ambiguity about what is good and what is evil is still there.
Both
One similarity between the two is Elphaba truly believes in something and is willing to fight for it.
The two mediums were and had to be made differently. Those who would read a book with commentary on governments, discrimination, and a mad Nanny aren't necessarily those who would see a Broadway musical with a funny song like Popular or words like "confusifying". You can enjoy both as long as you recognize there are differences.

Eleventh Doctor Who to be revealed tomorrow!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/news/090102_news_01
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl6lMClFu8c

I've no idea who it's going to be, but I wish him or her the best of luck. *sigh* I'm going to miss Tennant, but at least there are a few more specials left starting with Planet of the Dead. :D

In other Who news, I found a lovely comic that's hilarious, well written, and drawn! It involves all ten of the Doctors past and present and is more like a novel than a comic-plot wise. It's lovely.

The first page where the story starts:
http://comics.shipsinker.com/2007/03/11/doctor-who-comic-the-ten-doctors-page-1/

You can find everything that he's put up here:
http://comics.shipsinker.com/comic-archives/
